NGC 6992/5

The Veil Nebula is a large supernova remnant in the constellation Cygnus. The supernova which created the nebula occurred more than 30.000 years ago and about 1.600 light years distant towards the Cygnus arm of our galaxy. The brightest section, designated NGC 6992 and NGC 6995, forms the eastern part of the main loop. It features a filamentary structure which is visible in big telescopes and in this photograph. The remnant's dominating emission line is Hα (red), but there is also some green [OIII] emission towards the (left) edge.

Europeans call it the "Cirrus Nebula" because of its resemblance to cirrus clouds.

Notes: 7 exposures were taken in September 2004, 8 in October 2005. In-between, the camera was modified for more Hα sensitivity.
